Prevention & Support: Breast Cancer

dr-pincott-header-pink

This month’s Dr. Pincott’s Perspective suggests some ProMedics products to consider while you are developing treatment protocols for your patients—whether the goal is to prevent breast cancer, provide support during chemotherapy and radiation, or rebuild them following treatment. In my clinical experience it is very important to support breast cancer patients for one full year after therapy, to prevent a recurrence or long-term side effects.

ingrid-croppedFirst, we want to prevent breast cancer. With every female patient that comes to my office, I encourage them to maintain optimal vitamin D levels of 150 nmol/L, take daily fish oils at 3000 mg, probiotics and GreensFirst. Some research indicates that Nascent Iodine prevents fibrocystic breast disease, thus lowering the risk of breast cancer. I suggest low, preventive dosages such as 1 mg per day. These basic remedies provide anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and alkalizing effects that are the Foundation of Health. I encourage the usual lifestyle support, which emphasizes chemical-free, organic eating (avoid exogenous estrogens including hormones, pesticides and herbicides); drinking chlorine free, high-pH water; and, avoiding plastic in cookware and dishes. A good resource for comprehensive guidelines is The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Breast Cancer by Dr. Sat Dharum Kaur N.D.. Also encourage patients to connect with www.InspireHealth.ca.

  1. Prevention:

If a woman has a family history of breast cancer, you may want to consider long-term treatment with I3C or DIM, or BreastDefend, to lower inflammatory estrogens. JHS Medicinal Mushrooms are fantastic for immune support. Five Mushroom Formula at one per day can aid in prevention. Drinking green tea daily is an excellent lifestyle recommendation. MH Vitanox, which contains green tea, is a powerful anti-oxidant.

  1. During Treatment:

There is a lot of controversy surrounding what is safe to give to patients during chemotherapy or radiation. Please consult Dr. Neil McKinney’s “Naturopathic Oncology” Textbook for helpful insight. Additionally, click to read  Antioxidants and Chemo Dr. Block published in “Alternative and Complementary Therapies,” for a secondary opinion. GreensFirst can help with appetite and energy. I often have patients mix it with coconut milk or goat milk, as both of these help to put on some weight, if weight loss is an issue. Consider adding Dream Protein to this smoothie if the taste buds agree. For another source of protein, try SON Formula. It is an excellent source or pure, useable amino acids. Any of the JHS mushrooms are safe during treatment. Over the years my favorite has been Coriolus Super Strength. Consider rotating mushroom therapies such as Maitake, Cordyceps and Reishi every 3-4 months, as this provides optimal outcomes. Another valuable treatment option to consider is Astragalus. MH Astragalus Complex is an excellent choice. I also immediately start the patient on PectaSol C at 15 g per day, and I encourage the patient to get Galectin 3  (Gal-3_MCP_8.5×11 Handout 2017) testing to monitor the effects. A high dosage is encouraged for the first 6 months, followed by a lower dose of 5 g per day for a full year, as a preventative treatmentBCQ can act as a “natural Advil” to help with pain and swelling after surgery. Warn the patient that it may loosen the bowel. Ancient Minerals Magnesium Bath Flakes provide a soothing and gently detoxifying bath, as well as providing transdermal magnesium therapy.

  1. Rebuilding (maintain for one year, post-treatment):

BCQ: can be used in the rebuilding phase in addition to during treatment. Dose at 3 per day, long term.
BreastDefend® for Overall Breast Health and Support* This is an expensive product, but when planning your yearlong post-treatment protocols, it would save the patient from taking many different remedies at once.
GreensFirst: alkalizes the body while acting as a gentle detoxifier. I wait one year to get into more rigorous cleansing programs.
PectaSol C: 5 g per day, taken separate from food and supplements.
Mushroom Therapy: if not taking BreastDefend consider Five Mushroom Formula and alternating with Cordyceps, Maitake, Reishi or Chaga every 3-4 months.
MH Silymarin: provides NRF2 support for the immune system, and an anti-oxidant for the liver during the rebuilding phase.
MH Withania Complex or MH Rhodiola and Ginseng: can be considered for rebuilding mental and physical stamina, post-treatment.
